UN Development Adviser Kevin Watkins explains why the world needs the Decade of Action

The United Nations has declared 2011-2020 as the Decade of Action for road safety with the goal to stabilize and then reduce the level of global fatalities forecast to rise to 1.9 million by 2020. The Decade challenges the governments of the world to act to reduce the toll of road traffic death and injury now recognised as a major public health crisis and human catastrophe for the developing world in particular. The Decade will be officially launched on May 11, 2011. As part of the UN's global NGO network and Oman's NGO focal point, we will be supporting the Decade with a number of road safety activities. Any stakeholder interested in supporting these is welcome to contact us here

Death and injury on Oman's roads - unique online resource

From 2000 to mid-2009 over 6500 men, women and children lost their lives in crashes on Oman's roads and 75,000 or more have been injured, some disabled for life. This is a staggering number in a population of under three million.
