5 persons died and 6 others were injured in a collision in Al Kamil at 5.00 pm on Saturday, March 8. No other details of the crash were available.
| 5 girls die on way to school in Al Musanaa |
January 6, 2008 |
5 young girls aged 13-16 years died at 7.45am Sunday on their way to school in Al Musanaa in the wilayet of Al Batinah. The accident occurred when a car travelling towards them on a side road swerved into their path, clipped the front left wheel of the vehicle in which they were travelling then swerved a second time before slamming into the side of their vehicle, killing all the girls and severely injuring the driver of the car. The driver of the girls' vehicle was uninjured.

A horrific 4-car pile up on the Sur-Ibra highway on the last night of 2007 took the lives of 4 innocent people and that of a reckless driver heading to Sur from Ibra who overtook a 2nd car and collided head-on with a 3rd car going the opposite way. He then stalled on the wrong side of the highway where he was hit by a 4th car heading towards Sur. This car in turn veered in front of the 2nd car hitting it head-on. The driver of 4th car died as did a passenger in the 2nd car, the driver and a passenger in the 3rd as well as the reckless driver whose car set ablaze.

An appalling crash on Friday afternoon claimed the lives of all occupants of a vehicle travelling from Ibri in the direction of the Wilayet of Bahla. The crash occurred when an articulated lorry transporting chemicals pulled into the junction in front of the Ibri vehicle whose driver was unable to brake in time to avoid the crash. He died together with all his passengers.

3 people died in Al Mahda on Wednesday morning when a car travelling from Buraimi collided with another car that suddenly pulled out into the road in front of it. The Buraimi driver braked for 22 feet but was unable to stop in time to avoid the crash.

2 passengers died and a 3rd was injured along with the driver when their vehicle inexplicably swerved into a lamppost, veered off the road and crashed into a concrete wall in the Al Ghubra district of Muscat.
| Child thrown from car dies in Al Jabal Al Akhdar |

9 year old Melissa Goveas was one of the 42 persons who perished on Oman’s roads in only 10 days during the Eid holiday. A family trip to Al Jabal Al Akhdar turned to tragedy when the 4-WD in which they were travelling burst a tyre and rolled off the road onto rocks. Melissa and her brother were severely injured when they were thrown from the vehicle. She was later declared dead at Nizwa hospital.

In a horrific start to the weekend, a 4-car smash outside the Wali’s office in Al Mudhaibi left 2 drivers and 2 passengers dead and 5 other passengers seriously injured. According to an ROP report, the accident occurred when a driver overtaking 2 other vehicles at high speed attempted to swerve back into lane to avoid an oncoming vehicle and hit the back of the vehicle in front causing a 4 cars pile up. Most deaths and injuries were innocent travellers in the car that was hit.

3 women died and another was injured in a horrific accident near City Centre shopping complex at 9.45 pm Wednesday evening September 19. The accident occurred when a car travelling along the side road swerved, veered off the road and drove into the women.

According to a local newspaper report, 4 people died and 4 others sustained injuries in a high speed crash at Muthalath Majan in the Wilayet of Sohar at 11.00pm on Thursday, September 6. No other details of the crash were available.
| Son of cricket coach killed in Muscat |
August 7, 2007 |
The only son of Oman’s national cricket coach died from serious head and spinal injuries sustained in a crash 10 days earlier. The 16 year old high school student was riding pillion on a motorcycle when it collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle in the Al Khuwair district of Muscat.

4 people died and 3 were injured in a high-speed crash in the wilayet of Haima, Al Wusta region on Tuesday, August 7. According to a Royal Oman Police spokesman the crash occurred when the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle after a tyre burst and the vehicle hit a stationary object.

A high-speed head-on collision on Wednesday evening, June 27 on the main road between Sinaw and Izki left 5 people dead. The accident occurred when a vehicle heading from Izki to Sinaw suddenly swerved into the path of a vehicle heading in the opposite direction hitting it head on. The driver died along with 3 of his passengers as well as the driver of the other vehicle.

2 people died in Al Ma’amoura, Ad Dhahira region on Wednesday night, May 4 in a high speed tailgating incident. The crash occurred when the driver of a vehicle unexpectedly veered to the right. A second vehicle travelling behind was too close to take avoiding action and collided into the first. Two passengers in the tailgating vehicle were killed and the driver of the other vehicle and 4 of his passengers suffered light to moderate injuries.

4 people were killed in a crash in Hay As Saad in the Wilayet of Bahla on Saturday afternoon, February 6 as a result of reckless overtaking. A driver heading from Nizwa to Bahla lost control and crashed into the car he was overtaking when he tried to pull back into his lane to avoid an oncoming lorry. He and his two passengers died together with the driver of the car into which he crashed.

3 people were killed in a crash in Saham, Al Batinah on Monday, December 11. A driver and two of his passengers died late at night while trying to overtake a second vehicle travelling in front. An oncoming vehicle forced the first driver to pull back into his lane but, due to the high speed at which he was travelling, he lost control hitting the back of the vehicle in front. Two others were injured in the crash

4 people were killed in a road crash in Al Amerat, Muscat on Friday evening, November 10. A driver and his 3 passengers heading in the direction of Quriyyat died in a head-on collision after they unexpectedly swerved into the path of a vehicle heading in the opposite direction, according to ROP. The driver of the other vehicle and two of his passengers suffered moderate injuries.

Both drivers and all their passengers died in a head-on collision on the Wadi Quriyyat highway in the Wilayat of Bahla on Friday evening, September 8. The crash occurred when the first vehicle heading south was hit head-on when a car travelling in the opposite direction swerved unexpectedly into its path killing the occupants of both. The collision set ablaze the second car with its occupants inside.

7 people, including 3 from one family, were killed on the road from al Musannah to al Rustaq early Saturday morning, September 2 when the car in which they were travelling was hit head-on by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The crash was caused by reckless overtaking by the driver of the second vehicle according to ROP.

4 members of one family died and another critically injured when the car in which they were travelling early Friday afternoon in Al Kamil wal Wafi was hit head-on by a car travelling in the opposite direction. According to ROP, the second vehicle swerved unexpectedly and at close quarters into the path of the first, giving the driver no opportunity to take evasive action. The driver of the second vehicle escaped with moderate injuries.

June 14 , 2006 |
Seven people died and eight others were injured in two separate crashes in Oman at the beginning of the weekend of June 14th. A three car pile-up on the Al Buraimi-Al Jizzi highway left four dead and six injured.
In the town of Barka, Al Batinah region, three people died in a blaze when their car was hurled against a lamp post after pulling out at low speed onto the highway.

Nine schoolgirls aged 11 to 14 years from the same family died when the minibus carrying them to school in the Wilayat of Mahut collided with a pick-up at 6.45 am on May 2. Two more schoolgirls and five other passengers were injured.
Sultan bin Hamed Al Jahfiya and his brother Saeed from Haj village each lost three daughters in the crash which claimed the lives of three other cousins of their daughters. According to the ROP, the minibus pulled out at low speed into the path of the pickup whose driver was unable to stop in time. |

A collision between two vehicles in As Sharqiyya region of Oman resulted in the deaths of 2 people and injury to 3 others. The accident occurred at 9.35pm when a vehicle from Al Kamil wal Wafi heading in the direction of Muscat swerved into the path of a vehicle from Muscat heading towards Al Kamil.

ROP reports that 169 people have died and 1366 have been injured in a total of 1779 car crashes in the first quarter of the year from January 1st to March 31st 2006. The number of fatalities represents an increase of 26 over the same period last year. 9 of the deaths and 59 of the injuries occurred over a single weekend (March 22-24).
In the worst incident of the year so far, 4 people died and 2 were injured in a head-on collision between two vehicles on the notorious Wadi Al Aq road in Sumail on February 13th. A collision between two motorbikes in the Ibri area on March 20 resulted in the death of both drivers and one passenger.

In a grim start to 2006, the Royal Oman Police website reported that 17 people died and 144 were injured in a staggering total of 164 crashes over the Eid Al Adhaa holiday week. While most crashes occurred in the capital Muscat, typically, the most lethal crashes took place in Al Batinah and Ad Dakhiliyya regions.

12 people, including women and children, died in this high-speed head-on collision in Al Manara, in the Wilayat of Ibri. The crash occurred when a pick-up truck overtaking blind in a dust-cloud collided with a 4WD travelling in the other direction. Neither driver braked or swerved; they never saw each other approaching in the dust. |
